Raul’s Maya Del Sol Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Ah, singlehood, where you get to do whatever you want 95% of the time! What that really ends up meaning, though, is a lot of dinners by yourself. That's okay, because Raul's was by itself, too, on a Saturday night. The empty restaurant gave me time to chat with the owner, to get a meal recommendation based on my tastes, and to walk around sniffing things. I'm not weird- they were selling locally crafted soaps. I love an ethnic meal that stays true to the ethnicity and doesn't just cover everything in cheese (the American Way.). The decor, the menu, the atmosphere, the experince is nothing like an American Mexican restaurant, but also not really typical of general American restaurants, either. This was a great Mexican meal...that I got as take out and ate at home while watching an Italian film.

I LOVE this place. Totally authentic tacos that are soooo delicious! Especially the lengua! Best carne asada as well. The service is quick, the prices are totally fair, and the food is simple and second to none. I drag coworkers here as often as possible!

What a great time. The margaritas were the best and all if the food is so fresh. It's tucked away in Park Circle, so don't miss it. It's one if my new fave's!

Fantastic Mexican food. Visited for lunch. They unfortunately do not have a wait staff. You order from the hostess stand when you walk in the door. Ordered chips and salsa and that took 10 minutes just to get to the table and we were one of two tables in the entire place. The Mexican corn is the best dish I've had from anywhere in a long time!! I got a carne asada taco which was good but I probably wouldn't get it again. On the other hand, the al pastor taco was to die for!! Highly recommend Raul's for a quick and delicious lunch!

Went with a colleague today to Raul's. Similarly to Zia Taqueria, you order first, then sit down. While waiting for our food we went over to the little grocery store next door. The restaurant is clean, with family style seating. I've never been much of a torta person but I decided to order the Cemitas Poblanas with breaded steak. All I can say is wow. What a delicious sandwich, from the brioche style bread to the guacamole and all the other delicious flavors. Totally decadent. Oh and you can order it "wet" with sauce - red, green or mole sauce. I got some mole on the side, and it's simply delicious, I just didn't want to muddle the flavors of the sandwich. I'm a purist. In any event, absolutely delicious and I will be back.

Authentic...and that is high praise coming from a CA girl! We had the lunch special. He had the Pork Mole and I had the Beef in Black Chili sauce. Since it was 2 tacos each, of course we had to share. They were both delicious. Came with good old fashioned, creamy, flavorful refried beans, and a simple rice (mine was undercooked, but I was skipping the rice anyway). We look forward to going back on a weekend so we can try the margaritas. If those are good then this place is a trifecta!

We tried Raul's on Saturday night around 630p. We found it easily at the end of E Montague at Park Circle. First warning sign, no one sitting outside or cars in the parking lot. We walk up and go inside where we are told to order at the hostess stand. Awkward. We take a moment to peruse the menu in the empty, dark restaurant wondering if we are making the right decision to eat here. The hostess/waitress seemed new but not very polite. We ordered guacamole as an app, not spicy, real avocado used with crispy chips, this was the best thing we had. We also ordered chicken, pork, steak and fish tacos. They come with just onion and cilantro on top and if you want tomato or lettuce each item is 0.75 extra per taco. Each taco starts out at $3 and if you want toppings you're looking at more like $4.50. I understand cilantro and onion is traditional but it seemed plain. There were two salsas table side: a green and a red complimentary. Drinks were between $2-3. I wanted to try the horchata but they were out. I rather they be out than it be canned. The pork and steak was chopped small, making me think it was a disguised cheap cut of meat. Some of the cheapest meats can be made tender and delicious with long and low cooking, this was not that. The chicken tacos were a mix of white and dark meat, best of all. The fish taco says it has mango salsa but there was none, the waiter said it had mango. Maybe mango in the marinade? It didn't taste like mango. Overall, I had high hopes knowing that Raul's does pop ups at Butcher and Bee and they've done me no wrong. I will admit that Chipotle has spoiled us with toppings and options. I wish we'd gone there instead last night.

I got the Mexican street corn and the chicken tacos. The best part of street corn is that it's grilled and charred a bit, so the flavor is smokey and yummy. This "street corn" was canned corn, not even on the cob! It was tossed in chipotle-ish sauce with a bit of Parmesan cheese and then just warmed up. It was just kind of thrown together and not very tasty. On to the tacos, the meat was so wet (read: canned in water) that they had to bring me more shells just so I could pick them up without everything falling apart. My friend's food was just as disappointing. She ordered a quesadilla and requested no onions, they said they couldn't accommodate her because it was pre-made. Pre-made quesadillas, really?! How much time could they possibly be saving by premaking this item? There was nothing fresh on our table at all.

The most important thing is the food we ordered was correct and tasted great. My friend got a chicken burrito which was bigger than expected and it was really tasty (and quite spicy). I got the chicken torta which was delicious (sandwich with chicken, beans, lime mayo, lettuce, pickled jalapenos, guacamole). I ordered the special which included a drink for $10 but now that I look at the menu, you aren't getting a deal since the torta is normally $6.99 and I'm guessing the drink is $3. You order at the hostess station at the front of the restaurant, which if they were busy, it would have been a pain to stand in line for. I would prefer to sit down first, have time to look at the menu and then order but that's just me. The hostess/server brought our food quickly but never returned to the table again. I guess if you need something they don't already have on the table, you need to go tell her (she was the only person there other than the kitchen). I think this place has potential and I'm definitely to give it a try again!

Come here for the Cemitas torta (mexican sandwich). Maybe top 5 sandwiches in Charleston.

Our first visit was on a Sunday around lunch time and we were surprised to find out they only do brunch. Normally when we go to a new place we like to try their staple dishes (i.e. tacos for this place). Tried it again today and our meal was very good. We each ordered two tacos (steak and chicken) with rice and beans. When you come into this place, as others have mentioned, you will place your order up at the front and then have a seat.

Came here after horrendous service at basico. Food was amazing, service impeccable, and food came out lighting fast. Highly recommended for anyone looking for Mexican in Park circle area.

Viva la Raul's! Friends of Raul's Taqueria (formerly on Rivers Ave) eagerly anticipated eagerly anticipated the return of Raul's delicious Mexican food, and here it is -- in the much more accessible Park Circle business district. Raul's Maya Del Sol offers a walk-up counter, with a cozy, covered patio and wind-break. It features bright, Mexican-themed paintings, and attractive wooden chairs and tables. Today, I just made a quick stop for lunch. I had the day's special, Raul's version of the traditional chile verde: pork shoulder & belly slowly simmered in a truly spicy green tomatillo salsa. The very juicy and tender meat was served in a flour tortilla, as a burrito, which also included (what I believe to be) refried black beans and shredded lettuce. Lettuce may not be a traditional burrito ingredient, but it was not unwelcomed as a slight buffer to the heat of the chile. In addition to my burrito, I took a piece of tres leches cake home with me to share with my girlfriend. This earned me some serious bonus points, as Raul's tres leches cake is easily one of the best cakes in existence. The girlfriend and I will certainly be regulars at Raul's. We look forward to taking in brunch very soon, perhaps for tamales and carne en su jugo, NOTE: When parking, make sure not to take one of the antique mall spaces, as I understand they are rather territorial. There are a handful of unmarked spaces in the grass, immediately adjacent to the patio. There is also street parking, just a few yards away.

If you haven't eaten here yet, you need to stop what you're doing right now and make your way up to North Charleston to check this place out. Raul's has gone from pop-up dinner's at the Butcher & Bee, to a window spot at the end of E. Montague, to a full scale dine-in restaurant in only a year. His food is authentic, showcasing his considerable talent and his Mexican roots. My favorite dish by far is his Carne en su Jugo, which I lovingly refer to as "meat soup". Filled with steak, onion, bacon, beans, cilantro and avocado, it's a carnivores delight! The taco's are simple and delicious and he's the first person I've ever seen offer a chile relleno taco! My other favorite on the menu is the Mexican Corn Kernels. Imagine Mexican corn on the cob- with cheese, mayo, chile powder and lime, but then remove the cob and the hassle of everything getting stuck in your teeth. Ta-da---Mexican Corn Kernels! Super yummy! If you manage to have room left in your tummy, you should definitely try a slice of his tres leches cake. It is the best tres leches around and absolutely melts in your mouth. Kudos to Raul for his perseverance and making Maya Del Sol happen. I hope we can keep him around Charleston for a long time to come!

Great Mexican food at a good price. This place ain't just tacos and burritos. Quality, real Mexican dishes: Tortilla soup, carne en su jugo, tamales. Corn tortillas have good flavor. Camarones a la diabla are actually quite spicy. Brunch includes almond tamales, rosemary pancakes, and my favorite chilaquiles in town. Cost is more than the bland, oversauced tex-mex place. For my buck, well worth the $7-$11 entree price for quality Mexican food.

Indeed the chips are cold like they just came from the fridge. The squeeze bottle salsa was extremely unpleasant- the red and the green. I had enchilada with mole sauce and the sauce ruined the whole dish. My husband had tacos and they were great. Overall we thought the place was very overpriced and food didn't taste good. We'll just go back to LaHa.

I just dont get it. I gave his last place one star and poof it was out of business. I do read where many people say he can cook, so I gave this one a try cause he could have had a really off day the last time. The last place was cute, this one has the ambiance of an airplane hanger. Chips are extra, salsa sucks, prices are high. The 2 stars this time cause the meal was not quite as bad as his first joint.

We have tried Raul's twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. Our dinner was pretty good, but the lunch was excellent. We opted for the taco specials. The carnitas tacos and carne asada tacos are delicious! We had a side of chips and guacamole both times, the first time it was so spicy even my husband, who enjoys spicy food, couldn't eat much. The second time we asked for the spice to be toned down and it came out perfect! The highlight for me was the melon agua fresca, which was light, delicious, and refreshing. If you're hesitant because of the mixed reviews I'd suggest giving lunch a try!

Where to begin...we were told on a Friday there was a special- 2 margaritas and get a free app. What we ended up with was gigantic weak margaritas and "queso fundido" or as they make it broken cheese sauce with salsa in it. The chips were cold and stale and no one wants to apply salsa from a squeeze bottle. Are side plates too hard? On to the food- I had the barbacoa and pastor and husband had tongue and pastor tacos. The tortillas are NOT homemade and all tacos were flavorless (tongue tasted like boiled hot dog and barbacoa was like old bland bbq). We barely ate anything and got out of there stat. I have traveled widely in Mexico and let me tell you there is nothing authentic about this place. As a previous posted mentioned, it's not a coincidence no one is at the restaurant when everything in park circle is hopping. Ps the place splits the building with another business which is sectioned off with shutters - very weird.

Let there be no confusion about the reviews here. The bad reviews are right on the money... right down to the salsa in a squirt bottle. The good reviews must have been written by friends or relatives of the owner. There is no one more than me in Park Circle who wants to see businesses succeed and thrive. We so much wanted this restaurant, the only Mexican restaurant in Park Circle, to be a winner. We drive through Park Circle almost nightly and have never seen more than three or four cars there. We know that at at least three of the cars have to belong to employees. Not a good sign. We finally decided to go and try it the other night and the experience was disappointing. Having to place your order at the front entrance podium then pay and tip for it in advance is absurd. You see that in food courts in the mall..... not in legitimate sitdown restaurants When we inquired as to why they did it that way we were told that once they acquire another iPad then they will be able to take orders at the table. Really? After we placed our order we were instructed to seat ourselves at any table that was clean. That should've been our second red flag. There were only 2 other couples in the entire restaurant but there were dirty tables. As other reviewers had stated the Decor is meager and one person described it as looking like a yoga studio. That would be an insult to yoga studios everywhere. Let's just say that it looked nothing like a Mexican restaurant inside... in fact it didn't look like any type of restaurant inside. The one thing that they seem to be consistent about is a lack of customers. When we placed our order we asked if they served chips and salsa. The guy at the podium told us that chips and salsa were made to order and it would be extra. We said fine and paid for it....as "made to order" just seemed to make them taste better already. We were a little surprised when the stale chips were delivered to us in a red plastic deli basket and the red and green salsa came in 2 squirt tubes. Again we inquired as to our "made to order" salsa and chips and the server just laughed and said that he did make it to order. At that point we really should've just gotten up and left. The food came out quickly and the presentation was done well. Unfortunately the taste was marginal. This is not a Tex-Mex restaurant. It is authentic Mexican food and we knew what to expect. We've eaten at hundreds of good restaurants around and out of the country. However, regardless of whatever style of cooking you advertise to be your Carne Asada should not be tougher than the leather shoes you are wearing. I also specifically ordered flour tortillas and I was served corn tortillas. I paid extra for shrimp with my burrito and.... you guessed it....there was no shrimp on my plate. When I inquired about it several minutes later I was told that they were still cooking it. That simply means he forgot to order it. We had ordered two beers which were delivered promptly. When I asked for a glass of water he pointed at the fountain stand and said it's self-serve. Really ? Frankly I can't find one good thing about this restaurant except it's location. These guys are going to miss a great opportunity to provide a well needed Mexican restaurant to the Park Circle neighborhood. Running a restaurant is about servicing your customer. This restaurant has no idea how to service its customer. It needs a complete makeover of their operations. My prediction is that if this place doesn't clean up it's act and figure out a way to do business properly they will be closed by the end of the year. I for one will not be going back. I won't discourage you from going though....just letting you know our experience. Perhaps if enough people go they'll make enough money to make some changes to the restaurant. Very disappointing.

I don't understand the inconsistincies in the reviews here. I completely agree with those that gave Maya del Sol less than stellar ratings. Two coworkers and I were looking for a lunch spot to enjoy some Cinco de Mayo Mexican fare. I mentioned a new spot I noticed in Park Circle and was immediately met with a NO! and it's terrible. The Yelp reviews were mixed and the pictures looked delcioius so we decided to give it a shot. When you enter you wait in line to place your order at a podium. They should definitely post a menu to look at while you wait. The first time we laid eyes on the menu was when got to the stand and had no time to read or think about our choices. We all decided to order from the 1/2 price tacos listed on the chalk board. After paying $12 for two tacos, chips and salsa, and a drink I realized my tacos were not 1/2 price. Where in no way obliged, it would have been nice for the lady to let me know not all tacos were on special since she heard us discussing that and mention that's what we would order. After waiting for a table we sat down and quite some time later a small red and white paper tray of chips were delivered. Chip and salsa are not free, but $2. At first glance you can immediately tell these chips came from a bag. We asked where the salsa was and were directed to two bottles of red and green salsa that were placed on every table. You're paying for the basket of chips because the salsa is free....as it should be. Both salsas were completely watered down and when you scopped your chip you scooped nothing but watery hot sauce. Did I mention the chips were very stale? Fail. After a bit more time has passed the first order of two chicken tacos comes out. They look pretty tasty. Two corn tortillas topped with plenty of shredded chicken, cilantro, and onion. She waited for our food to be delivered, but eventually needed to eat so her tacos were not cold. Now that some time has passed someone comes over and lets us know the carne asada is taking a little longer than expected. Ok, no problem. A little longer the last two orders finally arrive. Diner #1 is finished at this point. My carne asada was pretty good. The meat was tender and had good flavor. My fish taco was decent as well. The menu states a pescada taco as fish and mango salsa. The meat had the flaky consistency of meat, but not flavor whateversoever. It was completely covered in a pretty tasty red sauce....no mango salsa here. Where the taco was good, you could have sold it as barbacoa and I would have never known the difference. Overall, lunch took over an hour. That's far too long for tacos and chips & salsa, especially when you're clientel is probably going to be on lunch break. Nothing here stood out to me and I left hungry. We should have taken the advice of those that had already tried Raul's. No need to go back for seconds.

There are a suspicious number of fake 5 star reviews; for that reason I've revised my review to 1 star. Look forward to Yo Bo Cantina Fresca coming soon to shut you down. We ate here on a Friday around 2pm. There was only one other patron in the restaurant. We approached the hostess stand who informed us that, of course, they were out of carne asada. We placed our augmented order and used their ipad to sign away. At a sit down restaurant I really do not like the fact that we had to pay for our food, and tip before we were served. How can you tip on service based on walking in? I suppose if we had cash--which is not often these days--we could have left a tip after the fact. We sat down and looked around: this place kind of looks like a yoga studio. lo extrano. Unfortunately the salsa verde filled squeeze bottles on the tables separated with the water on top and the rest seeped to the bottom. We watched curiously as the hostess filled the takeout salsas from the bottles on the tables in the dining room. We received our food relatively quickly. I ordered the country pork and Al Pastor and the other person I was with ordered the Al Pastor, Barbacoa and Pescado. Served in red french fry baskets, the country pork was okay and the Al Pastor was dry. Good thing there was salsa on the table; bad thing it looked so unappetizing. The Pescado, doused in a spicy sauce, was even still genuinely fishier than it should have been fresh, frozen or otherwise fit for human consumption. Not a good sign. The Barbacoa was the worst. It had a terrible texture and just didn't taste good. One bite, the rest left in the french fry-less basket. I we were not impressed and won't be coming back. i would rather lick my shoe. Do yourself a favor and head a bit further south to Santis. Recommend the Carne Rajas--I prefer without cheese--and a Horchata. When you wake up from your satiation induced nap then you can thank me.

Never again. 2 mediocre at very best entrees, 2 tasteless margaritas and 1 guacamole should never take 1 hour, 40 minutes and cost & 56 before tip. Horrible service and way over priced.

Very good good tacos! Make sure to add the green sauce and a hint of salt and lime! The Cemita with country pork in roasted red Chile was okay but not as great as the tacos! Oh and get the Mexican products for beverages! Definitely coming again and bringing friends.

Heard about this place yesterday while at our local watering hole. Being a Hispanic originally from the Southwest, I've found it difficult to find good "authentic" Mexican food in my travels. However, I'm always willing to give a place a shot because you never know. I always like to judge an eating establishment on its food primarily, with the service or "ambience" playing second fiddle. But please note, if the place is filthy I don't even bother. Anyway, on to the review. My wife and I stopped by Raul's this afternoon for lunch and to be quiet honest I was impressed. Granted, the seating is all outside for now and in cold or bad weather, it doesn't make for a great spot to grab some food, but service was good and the food was great. I had the green chile pork tacos while my wife tried the carne asada tacos. We split the guacamole and ordered green salsa to finish it off. Well worth it. Hand made tortillas make all the difference. I strongly disagree with Kate C.'s review. In fact, I challenge you to find better quality tacos (Taco Bell doesn't count) for the price Raul has. I've been to taco boy, santi's, and various other restaurants and, in my humble opinion, for the price, Raul's tops them all. While I've only been here once, I think that my other favorite Mexican place in N. Chas has some stiff competition for my stomach. Of course, this is just my opinion. But I believe that it is well worth it for you to give it a shot.

Raul is an amazing chef. Cooks with love and his food is solid! I am still thinking about the rosemary pancakes. A must order if you stop for brunch. The mole sauce is excellent. Ask him about his chef's table dinners. Prices are great which allows you to sample a bit of everything on the menu. Best tacos. He hand makes each flour or corn tortilla.

The most interesting, and probably most authentic true-Mex in town . . .and easily one of the best. Unusual dishes made with creativity and zest, as well as some standard . .. including great guacamole. We had the mole poblano (deep, dark and delicious) and the snappy appetizier jalapenos rellenos . . . they looked like mini gondolas of chorizos etc on the plate. The actual resturant is just coming into shape . . .a little dark, and not much flair. But lots of space . . .and Raul is a master chef . . .

I'm so HAPPY that Raul opened up again and still has his Famous Carne en su Jugo en the menu--I was really missing this soup as it's one of my favorites. The place is has some really cool decoration that came from Raul's ole restaurant in on Rivers. The layout is extremely cool and hope that he keeps on working on it!!! I'll be a regular for sure and will recommend this to everyone I know.

Ok. I would like to start off by clearing up a few things for the customers that wanted an authentic Mexican restaurant and then complained about the chips and salsa. Chips and salsa is not a traditional Mexican appetizer, it's American. And while I understand that we are in America. You're seeking authentic Mexican. . Y'all are use to la hacienda where you can fill up on chips to save yourselves from their vial "Mexican" food. Raul has made exceptions for those that want the chips and that's why you have to pay the $2 for them. Others were complaining that you have to order and pay at the podium. Raul has taken this restaurant from a window on the side of a building into a sit down restaurant in less than 6 months. He is still trying to catch up with the growth of his business. If you have a chance to stop by park circle and enjoy authentic Mexican food, this is a great place. His dinner can get a little expensive if you order the expensive things on the menu. This is because Raul buys local. Everything. Maria makes corn tortillas fresh to order and are amazing. If you are worried about price, go for lunch. He has a special every day that is around $10. Stop by for lunch and if you like it, try for dinner. Lunches are extremely busy so if you are in a rush, call ahead and they will make it to go for you.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
